This explains why everyone always asks me to spell my last name when I say it 🤣.
Did not know what it was called when a word loses it's meaning due to overuse! Appreciate the explanation.
My mind ALWAYS goes to the scene in King of Queens when they say "balmy" too many times when semantic satiation comes up. It makes me laugh thinking of it.
What an absolutely SenSational read! Thank you for enlightening me about semantic satiation. Every time I read one of your posts about the meanings of different letters, I become more in awe of you. It’s so incredible how you can feel letters, words, and sentences like that. With each new post, I, too, feel the words even more. This post was particularly meaningful for me because I have two S's in my name, Sonaakshi—a dash of gentleness and a hint of the sinister, or so I'd like to think...Lol. Your way of writing is as captivating as your unique ability to feel words.
You just summed up what I see in your aura in one sentence based on S...a dash of gentleness and a hint of sinister...I might add...and a heavy dose of AAAH. I really appreciate your contributions here too.
So THAT'S what it's called when a word loses all meaning... fascinating! Also, hilarious that the very word Semantic Satiation lost all meaning for you!! 😂 It IS quite a mouthful! And I love that it's an alliteration... I love alliterations (now I'm worried THAT word will lose meaning for me 😂).
I honestly didn't know what it was called until I saw that episode of Ted Lasso. But, I have experienced semantic satiation many many times. Alliteration is my absolute favorite poetic device.

balmy would be a great word to let slip into the oblivion of semantic satiation. Now I have to go find that clip and add it to the post! Thank you.
(fyi - my maiden name was Rasmusson…and people never knew how many Ss to put in when spelling it).

Yes! My brain actually speaks / write in alliterations almost constantly… literally love them 💛
