X - Marks the Spot
The magick of uncertainty, convergence, and hidden treasure.
Storytime
My GPS died at a rural intersection. No signal. Just me sitting at a literal crossroads with four identical gravel roads stretching out in every direction.
I had no idea where to go.
I could see farmland to the north. Woods to the south. A distant water tower to the east. Nothing but horizon to the west.
I sat there for ten minutes, engine idling, trying to remember which way Iâd come from. Each road looked the same. Each direction felt equally possible and equally uncertain.
Then I noticed the faded paint on the road beneath me. Two thick white lines crossing each other. An X marking the exact center of the intersection.
âX marks the spot,â I whispered to myself, the childhood treasure-hunting phrase bubbling up from nowhere.
Thatâs what X does. It marks the spot where multiple paths converge and asks you to honor the crossing before you commit to the road.
X is a trickster, a paradox, a mystery wrapped in angles and crossing paths. It doesnât behave like other lettersâit shape-shifts, it hides, it reveals, it ends things and begins them simultaneously.
When I tune into X through my synesthetic lens, I see it as metallic silver with deep purple shadowsâsharp intersecting lines that create a mandala of possibilities at their center. The sound vibrates at two frequencies at once: the hard âksâ creates a cutting, definitive edge while simultaneously the soft âzâ flows underneath like an underground river.
X is the only letter that looks exactly like what it does: it crosses itself.
Lesson: The Energetics of X
The Sound That Isnât (But Is Everything)
Unlike every other letter, X doesnât have its own pure soundâitâs a composite, a meeting point of two forces.
X = K + S (as in âexcellentâ - âEK-sel-lentâ)
X = G + Z (as in âexactlyâ - âeg-ZAKT-lyâ)
X at the beginning = Z (as in âxylophoneâ - âZY-lo-phoneâ)
This is deeply significant because X is the ultimate connector letterâit literally cannot exist without borrowing from its neighbors. Itâs the intersection made audible.
From an etymological perspective, X comes from the Greek letter Chi (Ď), which represented a hard, aspirated âkhâ soundâlike clearing your throat. In ancient Greek mysticism, Chi was the symbol for Christ (ΧĎΚĎĎĎĎ), and it became shorthand for the divine intersection between heaven and earth, spirit and matter.
The Romans adopted X but gave it the âksâ sound we know today. They used it to mark the number 10 in their systemâa completion, a crossing from single digits into double, a threshold.
X Marks the Spot: The Cartography of Mystery
When pirates (or children playing at being pirates) drew an X on a map, they were marking potentialâa place where something precious might be buried, but you wonât know until you dig.
X on a map says: âRight here, at this convergence point, something transformative awaits.â
In mathematics, X represents the unknown variableâthe mystery waiting to be solved. When we say âsolve for X,â weâre asking: what truth lies at this intersection?
In medical imaging, we X-ray the body to see whatâs hidden beneath the surface. The X penetrates, reveals, shows us the invisible structure underneath the visible form.
The Intersection Energy
When two roads cross, four new possibilities emerge. This is the magic of Xâitâs the point where choices multiply.
Think about it:
You can continue straight (maintain current direction)
You can turn right (shift to a new path)
You can turn left (explore an alternative)
You can turn back (reverse course)
At the X, you must choose. But hereâs the paradox: whichever path you take, the other three remain as phantom possibilities, alternate timelines branching from that single convergence point.
Through my synesthetic perception, I see X creating a sacred geometry patternâlike those yarn art projects where you wrap string around fingers to create a star mandala. Each crossing point generates a new center, a new focal point of possibility.
The Ending Thatâs Also a Beginning
Endings carry X energy:
The ex-husband (someone who crossed out of your primary path)
The exit (the crossing-out point where you leave)
Crucifixion (literally from âcruxâ - cross, and âfixusâ - fixed)
But X also marks beginnings:
Exquisite (from âex-â meaning âoutâ + âquaerereâ meaning âto seekâ - seeking outward, exploring new territories)
Exodus (the exit that becomes a journey to a promised land)
Extraordinary (stepping beyond the ordinary, crossing a threshold)
X is the liminal space, the threshold, the portal. Itâs neither here nor thereâitâs the crossing itself.
The Trickster Quality
X is the trickster energy because it holds opposing truths simultaneously:
Itâs a mark of validation (check boxes get Xâs)
Itâs a mark of rejection (wrong answers get Xâd out)
Itâs a symbol of multiplication (2 x 3 = 6, making things grow)
Itâs a symbol of deletion (crossing something out, making it disappear)
Itâs anonymous (sign your name with an X if you canât write)
Itâs intimate (XOXO - kisses and hugs)
The trickster energy of X asks: Can you hold paradox? Can you stand at the intersection and honor both/all directions without collapsing into one truth?
The Construction Metaphor
X marks:
Danger (stay away, somethingâs being torn down)
Potential (something new is being built)
Transition (the space between what was and what will be)
This is the spiritual construction zone of your life right now. The Xâs in your yard are literally showing you: âYouâre at a crossroads. Youâre in the liminal space. Youâre in the process of transformation.â
The fact that this is happening in your yardâyour personal, grounded, home spaceâsuggests the construction is deeply personal. Your foundation is being reworked.

Love this piece because of how you explain the letter X and how you let it weave into real life. I resonate deeply with the intersection energies!
As I'm reading this of course my nurse brain goes directly to the word "eczema." So many parents spell it "exzema" when they fill out paperwork indicating conditions their child has.
And how did you get to where you were going at that crossroads?
